Apr 1 – Folklore Museum

Only a half day of sightseeing today.  On our way to our only stop we passed the “Christmas Tree”.  This is a century-old, 80-foot giant rain tree.  Looks nothing like our evergreen Christmas trees.  Every year it is covered with Christmas lights and crowned with a star and festooned with some ornament lights.  As it is April there were no lights, but we looked it up on the internet and it is beautiful, giving a great light show.

Some photos from our drive around Cochin.

Our destination today is the Kerala Folklore Museum.  This is a huge private collection of over 6,000 traditional art, handicrafts, antiques, artifacts and historical objects.  It includes Hindu, Muslim, and Christian articles.  i was founded by antique dealer George Thaliath and his wife, Annie George.  They spent 25 years acquiring the items and then opened this museum.

The architecture was beautiful.  Per Wikipedia, the building took 60 artisans 7 years to build.  Construction incorporated many antique and traditional structural elements from the 17th to the 20th centuries.  Beautiful details.

The rooms were crammed with objects.

A display of Christian articles.

Lots of paintings.

Lots of statuary.

They had a display of jewelry...and a great jewelry shop.  Tara and Mary looked but didn’t buy.

After this we had the rest of the day off to relax and work on photos and such.  We are running way behind.
